Change of name is one of the applications for which HM Land Registry may require evidence of identity. Form ID1 can be used for a person whose change of name is confirmed by deed poll, statutory declaration or statement of truth, and it must be completed in the person's current name. Practice Guide 67 says form ID3 must be uploaded where a non-conveyancer is verifying identity to support a change of name application. With a conveyancer verifying by video, ID1 and ID5 is the usual route.
Why update the register
If your name on the title no longer matches your passport, your next conveyancer will have to deal with it, and a Form LL certificate has to confirm the person signing is the registered proprietor. Fixing the name in advance avoids a last-minute query.
ID1 or ID3?
| Who verifies you | Form |
|---|---|
| A conveyancer, in person | ID1 |
| A conveyancer, by video call | ID1 + ID5 |
| A non-conveyancer (change of name only) | ID3 |
Evidence of the name change

Which name goes on the ID1?
Your current name. Form ID1's notes say the form must be completed in the person's current name.
Can a friend verify my ID3?
Practice Guide 67 sets out who can verify ID3 and when it is acceptable. A conveyancer verifying ID1 by video avoids the question entirely.
