If you live abroad and need an ID1 for HM Land Registry, a UK conveyancer can verify you by secure video call and complete forms ID1 and ID5, which HM Land Registry accepts when Practice Guide 67's conditions are met. You do not need to travel or find a local notary. FormLL's partner solicitor charges £100 inc VAT per person; calls are booked around your time zone.
Your options from abroad
| Option | How | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| UK solicitor by video (ID1 + ID5) | Secure video call, forms emailed | Time zones; documents sent in advance |
| Local notary public | In person in your country | Practice Guide 67 says a notary must send evidence of their authority to practise in that jurisdiction |
| Fly back to the UK | In person with a UK conveyancer | Cost and time |
What you need
- A current passport
- Recent proof of address in your country of residence
- A stable video connection on a phone or laptop
- The title number and details of the application
How it works from abroad
- Tell us your time zone. Include your country and preferred call times in your enquiry.
- Send documents in advance. Clear photos or scans of your passport and proof of address are sent securely before the call.
- Video call. The solicitor compares you and your original documents on screen and takes a colour screenshot.
- Forms emailed. ID1 and ID5 are emailed to you or directly to whoever is lodging the application. If HM Land Registry requires originals, post can be arranged.
Proof of address when you live abroad
Your address history goes in section A of ID1. A recent local bank statement or utility bill in your name usually supports it. If your documents are not in English, tell the solicitor in advance; they will confirm whether a translation is needed.
Also protect the property
Overseas owners are on HM Land Registry's list of higher-risk groups for title fraud. If you are keeping the property, consider a Form LL restriction and Property Alert.

Start my enquiryFrequently asked questions
Will HM Land Registry accept a video ID1 if I live abroad?
Yes, if verified by a conveyancer with form ID5 completed and the conditions in Practice Guide 67 met. Where you live does not change that.
Can a foreign lawyer verify my ID1?
Practice Guide 67 deals with verification by notaries and others abroad and requires evidence of their authority to practise. A UK solicitor by video avoids that extra step.
What time are calls available?
Calls are booked with the solicitor around your time zone. Mention your country and preferred times in your enquiry.
