Form ID5 is a certificate completed by a conveyancer when they have verified a person's identity for form ID1 or ID2 by online video call. GOV.UK describes it as the form to be completed with ID1 or ID2 where a conveyancer verifies identity by video meeting. HM Land Registry introduced video verification in May 2020 and decided to continue it permanently; the required screenshot must be in colour. FormLL includes ID5 in its £100 inc VAT ID1 fee.
ID5 in one line
No ID5, no video verification. If your ID1 was verified on a video call and ID5 is missing, HM Land Registry will treat the verification as incomplete.
How video verification works
- Documents first. You send copies of your identity evidence to the solicitor before the call.
- The call. You hold your documents up on camera. The solicitor compares them to you and to the copies.
- Colour screenshot. The solicitor captures a colour screenshot during the call. GOV.UK's form history notes this must be in colour.
- Forms signed. The solicitor completes ID1 (or ID2) section B and certifies on ID5 that verification was by video.
Timeline of the rule
| Date | Change (per GOV.UK form history) |
|---|---|
| 4 May 2020 | ID5 first published as a temporary COVID-19 measure |
| Later update | HM Land Registry decided to continue the video practice introduced in May 2020 |
| Later update | Clarified the required screenshot must be in colour |
| 5 February 2024 | Latest update listed on the GOV.UK form page |
Mistakes that get ID5 rejected
- Black-and-white screenshot instead of colour
- ID5 missing, with ID1 section B suggesting in-person verification
- Signed by someone who is not a conveyancer
- Details on ID5 that do not match the ID1 or ID2 it supports
- Old version of the form — always use the current one from GOV.UK
Is video as good as in person?
For HM Land Registry purposes, yes, provided ID5's conditions are met. An answer on HM Land Registry's support forum in January 2024 confirmed that online video verification with ID1 and ID5 is acceptable provided the conditions in Practice Guide 67 are complied with.
Book both together: ID1 + ID5 by video, £100 inc VAT.

Do I fill in the ID5?
No. The conveyancer who verified you by video completes and signs ID5. You complete section A of ID1.
Is ID5 charged separately?
Some providers charge separately. FormLL's £100 inc VAT ID1 fee includes ID5.
Can ID5 be used with ID2?
Yes. GOV.UK says ID5 is completed with form ID1 or ID2 where a conveyancer verifies identity by video meeting.
